Originally aired 24th November 2002. Now this was a special show for me - and for the listeners too I might add - as Billy Jam, owner of the seminal label Hip Hop Slam recorded a Scratch Attack special just for us. Now, to me Billy remains someone I respect enormously, because when I was a no-mark starting out on this radio show airing on a small London station, I mailed him asking for some advice. Billy gave it in droves and even offered to organise a scratch BBQ at his place in Oakland, inviting some of the Bay’s finest round for a cut. Probably the most notable exclusive on this at the time was the world debut of Q-Bert’s newest track, “Turbo Paw Platoon” (one that remains a Q fave for me), not to mention newness from Italy’s Alien Army and the likes of DJ Pone too.

Ultimately, this went on to be one of our most-listened to shows and selections from it also appeared on the Hip Hop Slam release Scratch Attack 3. Hip Hop Slam lasted another year or so after this, but sadly seem to have since ceased operations - a real shame to me as they were the epitome of the DIY aesthetic on the turntablist scene. Sorely missed for sure - but you can hear just why on this very show…

Originally aired 17th November 2002. This show took a break from the more cut-focussed tracks to focus on the use of tablism as a wider melodic force within tracks. Hence, the likes of DJ Mayonnaise, Presage and Sixtoo stepped up showcasing a sound that ultimately saw them all go on to bigger and better things. Also featured are The Handroidz (who as I recall featured DJ Woody amongst their ranks), the Space Travellers and a rare old favourite of mine: 2tall’s excellent “Watergarden”…

Originally aired 10th November 2002. This show acknowledged the importance of the German tablist scene with a proper look at the key players, who back then included the likes of Noisy Stylus, M-Tech, Ground Zero (which as I recall featured DJ Scientist, now head of the excellent Equinox record label) and more.

Originally aired in November 2002 and featuring tracks from Muzik Fiendz, Illtaktikz, Infamous, Nyquist (aka 2tall), Kid Koala, Rob Swift & Bill Laswell and more, this show also took a look at the new Thud Rumble “Turntable Timmy” book & CD. Remember that? My word - now that was an all-time high in the Thud Rumble product catalogue eh?!

Something I always loved about Turntable Radio - and still love about it to this day - is that we got to air a whole bunch of stuff that never saw a proper release. On previous shows that included stuff like DeeSwift’s “StretchedAnimalSkinDrum” piece or (in stark contrast) Weak_Sauce’s priceless “Scrote Shrivla” track. On this show, unreleased gems appeared from SamSaScratch, Mista Ed and someone called Beltdrive Bandit… who frankly I cannot recall at all. Interestingly though, a couple of the tracks marked as “unreleased” later went on to get signed up. I know, because I signed them: Waxfactor’s “Reggaenomics” and 2tall’s “The Rise”.

Also appearing on this show are the likes of DJ Faust, DJ Talkback, Live Human, D-Styles, Rob Swift and more. Oh, and there’s the remake of Herbie Hancock’s “Rockit”, feat. Q-Bert, Mixmaster Mike, DXT, Babu, Faust and Shortee… something I’d also totally forgotten about!

The reissue of our opening 70 shows rumbles on, this time featuring music from the likes of D-Styles, Bullet Proof Space Travellers, Toadstyle, Shortkut, Craze, Kid Koala, Praxis, The Turntable Monks and - for the old skoolers out there - DJ Cheese, doing his thing at Fresh ‘86. Oh and DeeSwift - remember him? Well, here’s his then-infamous StretchedAnimalSkinDrum file that was impressing heads all over various websites.

We’ve had yet more delays, compounded in no small parts by my holiday-ing activities (it’s not how it sounds though, but I am making my way around the world slowly and surely, while making a massive hole in my bank account).

Finally though the last two videos from our Shibuya Session, part of our fifth anniversary podcast series, are ready for your digital consumption. These round off a series of 6 videos that go hand in hand with the audio podcast we aired back in April. Both that podcast and this series of videos are taken from the same session which featured Baku, Ken One, Naoki and Shige getting down and freestyling for about 3 hours. Check the original podcast post for more info on how it all went down.

For now though enjoy the last two videos. The second video is a freestyle between Baku, Ken-One and Naoki. Some upbeat simple shit that hits hard. And of course a little visual rework courtesy of our very own video wiz Ed.

This is the last of our Shibuya Sessions video. Remember if you like what you saw and heard then check out Baku’s website, as well as Ken-One’s myspace and the POPGROUP website. If you’re after some of the releases, you can buy them on the POPGROUP site which has some English navigation and you can also check the brand new Hear Japan site, which sells digital versions of many Japanese only releases, including Baku’s new album.

This time both the videos are in .mp4 format, optimised for iPod and iTunes viewing but fully playable on any players and platforms, as long as you have the right codecs. So if you get an error, just check your updates.

The file is 69mb in size.

Subscribers should already have the files on their computer or on their way shortly. If you aren’t subscribed to our podcast yet than what are you waiting for? You can subscribe via iTunes (find us in the podcast directory), by adding http://feeds.feedburner.com/turntableradio to your podcatcher, by clicking any of the podcatching buttons on the top left hand side of the site, or by visiting the feedburner page itself too (where you can also download the last 15 podcasts on the feed directly).

Lastly direct download link is below for the more lazy amongst us.

The last part of our fifth anniversary series will be yet more videos, this time a video interview with D-Styles and Shortkut as well as some footage from their showcase at the Vestax battle held in Shibuya in December 07. These videos will be online sometime in August, towards the end of our anniversary. In the meantime though don’t forget to check the new regular podcasts of the 70 original Turntable Radio shows presented by Mr Trick. And look out for a more normal podcast from myself sometime in the coming month or two as well.

For now though enjoy the last two videos. First up is a live remix of ‘I Ain’t Gangsta’ a track released on a 12″ single earlier this year featuring DJ Baku on production and Hokkaido rap crew Mic Jack Production on the mic. For this one though, Baku and Exsample basically took the accapella and parts of the original’s instrumental and flip it all around, adding melodies and a new bassline on top as well as freaking the vocals. It’s by far one of my favourite moments from the session and as has been the case throughout this series the footage is given a nice little work out by Ed.

And if you like what you hear than I suggest you check the video for the original, available here on Daily Motion and go get the 12″ which is available on POPGROUP.

This time both the videos are in .mp4 format, optimised for iPod and iTunes viewing but fully playable on any players and platforms, as long as you have the right codecs. So if you get an error, just check your updates.

The file is 55mb in size.

Show #2 remains a favourite of mine in the entire output of Turntable Radio. Why? Because it was a D-Styles and Shortkut special, in which I sat down with the guys to try and get more info from them. After all, they were never the most verbose people online (no bad thing that, I hasten to add), leaving plenty of scope to ask about, amongst other things, the breakup of the ISPs, the work with Ricci Rucker and more. In addition, we got a sneak preview of the then-forthcoming Phantazmagorea album and exclusively aired two tracks - quite a score at the time!

I also have fond memories of this for another totally unrelated reason, namely D-Styles phoning then-Snatchcon moderhater Big Lee in a bid to get him to come down and meet us. Lee was having none of it, and to this day I’m still convinced he thought it was a prank call or something.

Random trivia: DJ Woody later used the audio of D-Styles saying his name in a BBC Radio 1 session. My “sounds like Prime Cuts” tones were also in there. It was an odd moment.

Anyway - full tracklisting is here.

So: let’s do this: the original 70 Turntable Radio shows presented by me, Mr Trick. Looking back on these has certainly bought a strong whiff of nostalgia back in the place, and hearing the shows again actually made me see them in a different light. To me, Turntable Radio stands as a fine testament to a very niche music scene, and as time has passed its highly focussed area of coverage has made it something of a historical audio document of sorts, because at times it felt like we were airing every damn track out there.

For show #1, I did a special on a guy I later went on to sign: DJ 2tall. Time has shown this to be a good choice too, as 2tall has gone on to become one of the more respected producers to come from this scene, now working with the likes of Dudley Perkins among others.

Alongside 2tall’s work we had other tracks from UK tablists like Timestretch, Rasp and my future Rhythm Incursions co-presenter Waxfactor, not to mention music from bigger names like D-Styles, Mr Dibbs, DJ Shadow, Babu, Radar, A-Trak and more. For the full tracklisting, click here.

So: enjoy the first ever Turntable Radio show, originally aired back in winter 2002. Remember, we will be podcasting these weekly from now on, with occasional breaks for new shows from Laurent too. Spread the word!
