Turntable Radio – The Mr Trick Years: Show #14
October 28, 2008 by Mr Trick
Filed under Podcasts (all), The Mr Trick Years

Originally aired 5th January 2003: “Turntable Radio is taking a 2 week break to prepare new shows for 2003 and generally get a rest from the weekly schedule. So, over the next 2 shows we will be looking at mixtapes, airing segments from our favourites out there. This week: the Invisibl Skratch Piklz special – we look back at the seminal mixtapes dropped by the members of the ISPs, and air 30 minute excerpts from Q-Berts “Demolition Pumpkin Squeeze Music”, Mixmaster Mikes “Rescue 916″ and Shortkuts “Rekonstructed Elements”. All are classics: mixtapes that we remember as being a prime factor in getting us all hooked on turntablism in the first place. Heard them before? Well listen once again and join us in getting all nostalgic for great days Not heard them before? We envy you – you’re in for the mother of all treats!”

5th Anniversary podcasts – D-Styles and Shortkut interview pt 1

As announced last week, the last of our 5th anniversary podcasts is an exclusive video interview with D-Styles and Shortkut, filmed in December 07 in Tokyo, shortly after the Vestax freestyle battle which was held in Harajuku.
This interview links right back to the first few TTR shows presented by Trick (and which we’ve been re-podcasting weekly since the summer just in case you’ve been under a rock somewhere), where he interviewed Short and D when they toured Europe with the Beat Junkies.
To celebrate our anniversary we decided to link up with the two of them again and chew the fat over various things from battles (an unavoidable subject considering their reason for being in town) to recent works, hyphy music, dubstep and the whole turntablist thing, you know.
The interview is split over 3 videos, filmed by DJ Moyma and conducted by both myself and Moyma. Editing once more, and for the last time, comes from Ed Rooth. Many thanks go to D and Short for their time, humour and openess, Reishi at Vestax for making it happen, Moyma for filming, Ed for editing and Henshaw, Byron and S-Tokyo for the jokes and ping pong madness that ensued.
For more info on D-Styles and Shortkut peep the myspaces, and for more on Vestax head over to their official site.
That’s it for our 5th anniversary podcasts, I hope you enjoyed them as much as I did putting them together. We’re resuming our re-run of the original 70 shows presented by Trick next week, and I should be dropping a more ‘normal’ podcast sometime in late October or early November (depending on how busy life continues to keep me) and also look out for a special Italy session towards the end of the year too now that I’ve temporarily relocated to the old continent.
All three videos are in .mp4 format, optimised for iPod and iTunes viewing but fully playable on any players and platforms, as long as you have the right codecs. So if you get an error, just check your updates. This first video is 103mb in size.

5th Anniversary podcasts – D-Styles and Shortkut live in Shibuya pt 2

This is part two of the D-Styles and Shortkut live in Shibuya video podcast. Make sure you check the post for part 1 for the full fat low down on what this is all about.
Part 2 is more of the same, with the added bonus of a guest appearance from Japanese scratch prodigies Sara and Ryusei. As I mention in the original post, watch for their faces as D gets loose on the electro beat. This footage was filmed by DJ Moyma at the Vestax Extravaganza battle in Shibuya, Tokyo, December 2007.
As with previous multi-part video podcasts we’ve done, this one is split into two posts, each with one video and made live consecutively. Subscribers should have the files downloading to their computers right now, and those who aren’t subscribed yet can do so with the widgets on the left or by clicking on the RSS icon in the address bar. Those still too lazy to do the whole podcasting ting can grab the direct link below.
Once again both the videos are in .mp4 format, optimised for iPod and iTunes viewing but fully playable on any players and platforms, as long as you have the right codecs. So if you get an error, just check your updates. This second video is 69mb in size.
For more info on D-Styles and Shortkut peep the myspaces, and for more on Vestax head over to their official site.
Thanks go to D and Short for their time, Moyma for the camera work, and Reishi at Vestax for help in making this happen. And a massive thanks and big up also goes to Ed Rooth for his editing work. These videos will be the last ones Ed edits for us for a while as he knuckles down and gets busy with real life. Since joining the TTR family last year Ed’s put in some amazing work with the video podcasts we’ve been releasing this year, so a massive thanks goes out to him and he’ll be sorely missed while he’s gone.
Stay tuned for the interview which will go live in one week, then we resume our regular re-run of the original shows and I’ll also be putting in another appearance with a more regular podcast towards the end of the month.

5th anniversary podcasts – D-Styles and Shortkut live in Shibuya pt 1

True to the saying ‘better late than never’, I’m very happy to bring to you the last part of Turntable Radio’s 5th Anniversary podcast series. I’ll spare you the details of the delay, but let’s just say that 2008 has been an interesting year for me so far and my world trip didn’t help with making things happen on time as they say.
Still we’re there, and so we take a break from the re-run of the original 70 shows presented by Mr. Trick to bring you a very special series of videos featuring D-Styles and Shortkut. Altogether there are 5 videos spread over 2 events – a live showcase as part of the 2007 Vestax Extravaganza battle that took place in Shibuya, Tokyo, last december, and an interview with D-Styles and Shortkut conducted the same weekend in Tokyo. The interview is all the more special as D-Style and Short were the first people to be interviewed by Trick 5 years ago (well actually nearly 6 now!) when the show first started. This updated interview sort of links back to those humble beginnings and brings us full circle 5 years on, as we continue bringing you fresh new music from the tablist world on the regular.
We’re starting this week with two videos from the live showcase. As I mentioned this was filmed during the Vestax Extravaganza battle held in Shibuya in December 07. The footage was filmed by DJ Moyma (big up your bad self sir!) and unfortunately we couldn’t get a separate audio recording so it gets a little ‘rough’ in certain parts, but I think you’ll agree it’s worth it to see two of the finest tablists put on a, pretty much unrehearsed, fine musical showcase. Also look out in part 2 for a guest appearance from Sara and Ryusei, the two Japanese prodigy kids that blew up all over youtube and the internet in the last year. I particularly like the look on their face as D lets loose on the electro beat!
Once again both the videos are in .mp4 format, optimised for iPod and iTunes viewing but fully playable on any players and platforms, as long as you have the right codecs. So if you get an error, just check your updates. This first video is 53mb in size.
That’s about it, video 2 will follow in a few minutes.
Stay tuned for part 2 people and the interview goes live in one week, then we resume our regular re-run of the original shows and I’ll also be putting in another appearance with a more regular podcast towards the end of the month.

The reissue of our opening 70 shows rumbles on, this time featuring music from the likes of D-Styles, Bullet Proof Space Travellers, Toadstyle, Shortkut, Craze, Kid Koala, Praxis, The Turntable Monks and – for the old skoolers out there – DJ Cheese, doing his thing at Fresh ‘86. Oh and DeeSwift – remember him? Well, here’s his then-infamous StretchedAnimalSkinDrum file that was impressing heads all over various websites.

Turntable Radio – The Mr Trick Years: Show #2

Show #2 remains a favourite of mine in the entire output of Turntable Radio. Why? Because it was a D-Styles and Shortkut special, in which I sat down with the guys to try and get more info from them. After all, they were never the most verbose people online (no bad thing that, I hasten to add), leaving plenty of scope to ask about, amongst other things, the breakup of the ISPs, the work with Ricci Rucker and more. In addition, we got a sneak preview of the then-forthcoming Phantazmagorea album and exclusively aired two tracks – quite a score at the time!
I also have fond memories of this for another totally unrelated reason, namely D-Styles phoning then-Snatchcon moderhater Big Lee in a bid to get him to come down and meet us. Lee was having none of it, and to this day I’m still convinced he thought it was a prank call or something.
Random trivia: DJ Woody later used the audio of D-Styles saying his name in a BBC Radio 1 session. My “sounds like Prime Cuts” tones were also in there. It was an odd moment.
Anyway – full tracklisting is here.
