france-sm“This week Turntable Radio turns its attention to the French turntablist scene, airing tracks from the likes of DJ Pone, Netik, Troubl, SamSaScratch, Crazy B, DJ Mouss, Turntabl Spirits, Audiomicid (feat. DJ Kodh) and more. Most importantly though, we are proud to air another WORLD EXCLUSIVE – this time courtesy of reigning DMC Team champions Birdy Nam Nam. The track, “From Here To There”, has to be heard to be believed: think dub style beats and crafty turntable melodies and you’re only halfway there. This one has been on permanent rotation since we got it – superb! Also on air this week are: Astro, Revolution, DJ Idea, Q-Bert, Craze, Scarfade, Mista Ed, Stylewarz, Short-e, Phaderheadz, Mixmaster Mike and more… As ever, this shit ain’t to be missed people!” (Originally aired 2nd Feb 2003)

flashback-sm“This week we step back with more never-before-aired tracks and sessions than ever, from various tablists across the world including Scarfade, Timestretch and Marvel in the UK, Manic Store in Japan, DJ Joolz in Germany and much, much more. To celebrate the release of the awesome “History of the Hip Hop DJ vol. 1″ CD we are also doing a “super old skool” triple threat of cuts, harking back to 1982, 83 and 84 respectively with tracks from World Famous Supreme Team, Uncle Jamms Army and Knights of the Turntables. Nostalgic stuff – make no mistake! We are also proud to air in full the mighty battle between DJs M-Tech and Netik at last years ITFs. The pedigree of both these guys is ridiculously high, thus guaranteeing this to be some stunning audio. A head to head battle, it demonstrates all the things we love about these contests. So, sit back get comfortable and crank the stereo up LOUD, cuz this is one show you do not want to miss…” (Original show aired 19th Jan. 2003)

‘Cuts of Culture 2 – The Podcasts’: Week 9a

CoC week 9

For the last week of our ‘Cuts of Culture 2′ podcast series we’ve dug into the archives of TTR and decided to bring you a project which we’ve discussed before (and partly aired) but which has never seen the light of day in full. As such we’ve decided to put it out there for the whole world to enjoy. And we hope you do. The project in question is the remix EP of the Noisy Stylus debut album ‘Table Manners’. It features 5 remixes (3 of which we’ve aired before) from a range of artists, all with loose or close ties to the tablist scene. In addition to this remix EP we’re also podcasting our last video, this time a compilation of trailers and teasers for upcoming/current projects by people who we’ve showcased in the podcast series.

Noisy Stylus – The Table Manners Remix EP

This remix EP was a project originally started shortly after the release of Noisy Stylus’ debut album. The aim was simple – commission a series of remixes of various tracks from the album for a future release. Unfortunately due to various issues and problems, we weren’t able to commission remixes from all the artists which were originally earmarked, and the project was left to ferment for a while. During that time we did manage to get some remixes done, and these form the remix EP which we are now making available, with the full consent of all the artists involved.
The remixes were done over the period of a year during 2005/2006. As I’ve mentioned before 3 of them have been aired before on TTR podcasts, while the last two have never before been heard. The artists who’ve taken part in this project include 2tall, Netik, Tatsuki, Timecode (aka Sparky T) and Project Fallen (an alias of TTR’s original presenter and current Rhythm Incursions host and general busy man Mr Trick). In total 4 of the album’s track have been remixed. The tracklist for the remix EP is as follows:

Noisy Stylus – Battle Mentality (Netik Remix)
Noisy Stylus – Battle Mentality (Tatsuki Remix)
Noisy Stylus – Kindness (The Project Fallen Abstract remix)
Noisy Stylus – Late Train (2tall’s Love Cinema remix)
Noisy Stylus – Never Leave (Timecode remix)

The remixes all offer varied takes on the originals, which were all scratched tracks. From darker and heavier remixes from Netik and Tatsuki to more mellow, drone like textures from Project Fallen and rhythmical, upbeat versions from 2tall and Timecode. We hope you enjoy these remixes, and if you like what you hear and never checked the original tracks then head over to Noisy Stylus’ homepage to order a copy.
The remix EP is available as a .rar compressed file containing all five remixes. All files within there are 320kbps mp3s apart from the Project Fallen one which is 192kbps. To open the .rar file use any normal decompression program.

The file is 48mb, .rar format. Use WinRAR or any normal unzip program to extract the files.

‘Cuts of Culture 2 – The Podcasts’: Week 8

CoC week 8

We finally reach the penultimate session in our 2 month long special podcast series. After 7 weeks of videos and audio we’re now very proud to present to you the Cuts of Culture 2 compilation mix by 2tall. Which I’m going to guess is probably what most of you have been waiting for. Well you have to wait no longer, it’s here in its full glory for you to enjoy. And be sure to stay tuned for week 9, as we see off the Cuts of Culture 2 Podcasts with some very tasty secret downloads, which you’ll have to wait another week to find out all about.

Various Artists mixed by 2tall – Cuts of Culture 2
This mix follows from the first Cuts of Culture compilation which was released in 2005. Once more the idea was simple – to put together and showcase a selection of who we rate as the best and most interesting artists today working with turntables. As is always the case we weren’t able to get everyone we wished, but after 6 months of hard work in early 2006 2tall was able to put together this mix showcasing some of our favourite established and upcoming artists.
Building on the first release, this time we also wanted to showcase more worldwide talent and so we have not only established names from the US and European countries, but also upcoming talents from Poland, Japan, South Africa, Hungary and Germany. In addition we also wanted to put more focus on the production work which these artists do, after all the turntable is only a means to an end, another production tool. Something we’ve done by featuring collaborative tracks between tablists and producers including the likes of Bayaka (Japan), Exile (US), Thrash (UK), Evil Ed (UK) and Bichi (Denmark).
Exclusive tracks come from the likes of D-Styles, Excess, Tayone and Bungalow Zen, ie.merg_, Netik and Dq alongside tracks which are available in all good shops, and which we urge you to check out if you like what you hear.
Rounding off this showcase of musical talent is another posse cut masterminded by 2tall – following from his first posse cut on the previous volume, this time his ‘Sharpshooters Convention’ features renowned and not so known cutters including Enfoe, Taim, Unkut, Square One, Rafik, Captain Cavern and Netik.
As we’ve said before the aim with Cuts of Culture has always been simple and we hope that once more we’ve managed to achieve it. Show that there is so much more to this scratching thing than what people might first think and provide a platform for people to showcase their work to the public at large. The mix, and compilation, is now just one year old, having been originally planned for a late 06 release and while it’s taken some time to get it out we reckon it’s still sounding fresh.
To accompany this download we’ve made available the original liner notes and tracklist in pdf format as well as a hi res version of the cover, which you can download and print should you want to (see links below).
For more on 2tall and all the artists and releases check the liner notes which include links and all release info (links are clickable directly from the pdf file).

‘Cuts of Culture 2 – The Podcasts’: Week 4b

CoC week 4

For week 4 of the Cuts of Culture 2 Podcasts we bring you more exclusive video and audio, this time from France, Belgium and the Netherlands. Grazzhoppa’s DJ Big Band provides the video, with a promo of their live shows, while Netik provides the audio, with an exclusive track recorded specially for the Cuts of Culture 2 compilation.

Netik – Synthesis
France has been responsible for steadily producing some of the most interesting turntablists since the mid 90s, most notably in the early 00s when a trio of French youngsters took the world of battles by storm bringing with them new flows, techniques and sounds which would be crucial in shaping the direction of battles for the years to follow (whether or not that’s a bad thing in your opinion). Netik was one of those youngsters (Kodh and Troubl being the other two, who were featured on the first volume of Cuts of Culture), and while he left the world of DJ battles behind in 2002, he kept busy involving himself in various projects, live shows and concentrating on production. He however made a comeback in 2006, taking the DMC world crown, a first for a French DJ, with a set that left people firmly divided – agressive, overbearing and in your face, but undeniably skillful and energetic. Much like the three of them did in the early 00s, this win has now left people divided over whether or not the victory was right and much additional online commentating about this and that, which is quite frankly beyond the point.
Whether or not you like his style, one thing is undeniable about Netik – the man is seriously talented on the cut, as examplified by the many freestyles we’ve aired and showcased on here and other sites, and what’s more he’s also pretty deft in the studio. In 2005 he sent me a CD full of unreleased productions and remixes, which was more than we needed to convince us that we had to get him on the project. While many have chosen to a follow path inspired by and trodden by others before them, Netik has taken inspiration from his hip hop roots, but also from electronica, and has been cooking up some dark and twisted beats, as well as uptempo, funky numbers – crucially, none of his productions sound like anyone or anything else, as it should be.
For Cuts of Culture 2 he set about producing a track exclusively for the project, the result of which is ‘Synthesiz’, a pretty inspiring piece of uptempo electronica, heavy hitting but still soulful. We’re incredibly happy with the result and we hope you’ll be too.
For more info on Netik, his history, tour info and audio/video treats head over to his myspace page. You can also find some freestyle videos alongside 2tall and Tigerstyle in Spinscience’s download archive.
The file is 11mb, .mp3 format, 320kbps.
