Oh hi there. Yes you’re not mistaken we are back with a regular podcast, with a little delay but hey good things come to those who wait right? Things might have quieten down on the scratch scene overall, well actually they have but that’s an entire other discussion we’ll have for another time, but that doesn’t mean there is nothing out there and so this month’s podcast brings you a whole bunch of new music, a few exclusives and some slightly older bits thrown in for good measure.

As usual we’re repping worldwide, from Canada to Japan, France to Italy and England. New tracks and exclusives come from Aupheus, DJ 1Tarow, Uncle Lew aka Square One, John Type, Tayone, Ruckus Roboticus, Ghislain Poirier, iNSIDEaMIND, Fidel Cutsro, Baku and Hakujin and we’ve also got a slightly older track from A-Trak’s never released tablist album, featuring Little Brother on the mic.

Full tracklist and details of where you can cop all this are below as well as direct link to the podcast for those of you who still ain’t got to grips with either iTunes or feed subscriptions. As usual if you like what you hear than please go and support the artists, support the music.

That’s it for this month, we return to our podcasting of the original Turntable Radio shows presented by Mr Trick next week and look out for a site redesign and some fairly big changes to the content coming up soon as well. One more podcast should see the light of day before the end of the year hopefully, but there’ll be more on that very soon. Till then enjoy!

5th anniversary podcasts – Shibuya Sessions videos pt 3.2

We’ve had yet more delays, compounded in no small parts by my holiday-ing activities (it’s not how it sounds though, but I am making my way around the world slowly and surely, while making a massive hole in my bank account).

Finally though the last two videos from our Shibuya Session, part of our fifth anniversary podcast series, are ready for your digital consumption. These round off a series of 6 videos that go hand in hand with the audio podcast we aired back in April. Both that podcast and this series of videos are taken from the same session which featured Baku, Ken One, Naoki and Shige getting down and freestyling for about 3 hours. Check the original podcast post for more info on how it all went down.

For now though enjoy the last two videos. The second video is a freestyle between Baku, Ken-One and Naoki. Some upbeat simple shit that hits hard. And of course a little visual rework courtesy of our very own video wiz Ed.

This is the last of our Shibuya Sessions video. Remember if you like what you saw and heard then check out Baku’s website, as well as Ken-One’s myspace and the POPGROUP website. If you’re after some of the releases, you can buy them on the POPGROUP site which has some English navigation and you can also check the brand new Hear Japan site, which sells digital versions of many Japanese only releases, including Baku’s new album.

This time both the videos are in .mp4 format, optimised for iPod and iTunes viewing but fully playable on any players and platforms, as long as you have the right codecs. So if you get an error, just check your updates.

The file is 69mb in size.

Subscribers should already have the files on their computer or on their way shortly. If you aren’t subscribed to our podcast yet than what are you waiting for? You can subscribe via iTunes (find us in the podcast directory), by adding http://feeds.feedburner.com/turntableradio to your podcatcher, by clicking any of the podcatching buttons on the top left hand side of the site, or by visiting the feedburner page itself too (where you can also download the last 15 podcasts on the feed directly).

Lastly direct download link is below for the more lazy amongst us.

The last part of our fifth anniversary series will be yet more videos, this time a video interview with D-Styles and Shortkut as well as some footage from their showcase at the Vestax battle held in Shibuya in December 07. These videos will be online sometime in August, towards the end of our anniversary. In the meantime though don’t forget to check the new regular podcasts of the 70 original Turntable Radio shows presented by Mr Trick. And look out for a more normal podcast from myself sometime in the coming month or two as well.

For now though enjoy the last two videos. First up is a live remix of ‘I Ain’t Gangsta’ a track released on a 12″ single earlier this year featuring DJ Baku on production and Hokkaido rap crew Mic Jack Production on the mic. For this one though, Baku and Exsample basically took the accapella and parts of the original’s instrumental and flip it all around, adding melodies and a new bassline on top as well as freaking the vocals. It’s by far one of my favourite moments from the session and as has been the case throughout this series the footage is given a nice little work out by Ed.

And if you like what you hear than I suggest you check the video for the original, available here on Daily Motion and go get the 12″ which is available on POPGROUP.

This time both the videos are in .mp4 format, optimised for iPod and iTunes viewing but fully playable on any players and platforms, as long as you have the right codecs. So if you get an error, just check your updates.

The file is 55mb in size.

Baku, Shige, Naoki

Here is part 2 of the second round of videos from Shibuya Session. For full details and info check the post for part 1.

This video, featuring Ken One on drums, is 123mb in size.

As usual both vids are in .m4v format, optimised for iPod, iTunes and Quicktime viewing but they will also work with any standard video player and the latest codecs on any platform.

5th anniversary podcasts – Shibuya Sessions videos pt 2.1

Baku, Shige, Naoki

We’ve had some delays, between Ed who does the editing for our vids falling sick and myself having left for a little world tour, but the second part of our Shibuya Sessions videos is now ready for your enjoyment.

This time round both videos feature DJ Baku and Exsample, aka Ken One, Naoki and Shige, freestyling together. In the first video, Naoki is on the drums, while in the second one it’s Ken One on the drums. Both vids have once more received a fine visual treatment from Ed, so I hope you’ll enjoy watching them as much as we have putting it all together.

As usual both vids are in .m4v format, optimised for iPod, iTunes and Quicktime viewing but they will also work with any standard video player and the latest codecs on any platform.

The first video with Naoki on the drums is 39mb in size.

Subscribers should already have the files on their computer or on their way shortly. If you aren’t subscribed to our podcast yet than what are you waiting for? The last 2 videos in the series will be online by early next week, and then we will start podcasting the original TTR shows, presented by Mr Trick, as announced recently. So stay tuned as usual and expect a change to how things look round here as well in the coming weeks (if I can drag myself away from the beaches of South East Asia, which let’s face it is a damn sight more tempting than tinkering with php files and templates!).

5th anniversary podcasts – Shibuya Sessions videos pt 1.1

Miyajima and Baku

EDIT: I’ve just realised, a few weeks later, that the feed cannot send out two videos at once, something I actually already knew but managed to forget! And so Ken One’s loop routine which I announced in this post was actually never podcast. I’ve now fixed that and the video has gone out under the pt1.2 post. Apologies everyone!

We continue the 5th Anniversary podcast series with a return to the recent live session we recorded in Shibuya with DJ Baku, Exsample and Miyajima. But this time we bring you videos of the session to compliment the audio podcast we broadcast about a month ago.

Over the next 3 weeks we’ll be podcasting 6 videos, 2 at a time, recorded during the session. The audio from these videos was first aired in last month’s podcast, and so this time you get to see as well as hear what the guys were doing. And all the videos come with some very nifty editing and visual tricks from Ed Rooth who has been putting in some work to bring you something that’s as enjoyable to watch as it is to listen.

Our first two videos this week feature Ken One solo, with the new loop routine he premiered for us during the session, and Baku, Miyajima and Ken One together doing a little improvised freestyle with Baku on drums, Ken One on bass and Miyajima on vocal cuts.

And don’t forget you can also grab any of our podcasts via the direct download links inside the posts – see below for this week’s ones!

As usual all videos are in .m4v format, optimised for iPod, iTunes and Quicktime viewing, on the go or on your PC. The videos can also be viewed with all standard players including Windows Media Player, VLC, Divx etc…

Ken One’s Loop routine is 67mb, while the Baku, Ken One and Miyajima freestyle is 44mb.

Stay tuned for part 2 next week, as well as some important website announcements coming up soon.

Turntable Radio – April 2008 podcast

Filed under Audio Podcasts, Podcasts (all)

Following on very swiftly and quickly, for once, from our recent special live podcast as part of the 5th Anniversary series, we return to a more normal broadcast with our April show.

This show was originally supposed to come with a special reminiscing mix to replace the show Trick and I were going to do, but continuing a very unfortunate series of technical mishaps and problems, I haven’t had the time to do this, so instead we just bring you the usual hour-long serving of new and exclusive material from around the world.

Up this month we’ve got some great new tracks and material from a whole bunch of people, keeping it worldwide as usual. In no particular order, we have new stuff from 2tall, ADS, Ill Insanity, Baku, INSIDEaMIND, Naoki, Ken One, Quest, Red, Kwote, Faust, Morse and B-Ju. Most of these are all taken from just released or forthcoming releases, so as usual if you like what you hear check the links and go out there and support the artists.

We also start the show with a very rare and sought after track from DJ Krush and DJ Klock, taken from a Nike sponsored 12″ entitled ‘Cage’, which came out in 2001. The 12″ features Krush collaborating with Klock on one side and Baku on the other, on two interpretations of the same track. This track goes out on the first year anniversary of Klock’s sad passing away, and our thoughts go out to his family at this time.

That’s about it, check the tracklist for full details and linkage as usual, and stay tuned for the next 5th anniversary podcast which will be videos from our Japanese session and should be incoming in a few weeks.

Subscribers should already have the file waiting on their desktop, or on its way. For those who haven’t subscribed yet, it couldn’t be easier: either use any of the shortcuts on the top left corner of the blog to add the show’s feed to any podcatcher, or visit our feedburner page or launch iTunes and find us in the podcast directory where you can subscribe automatically. And for the really lazy ones there is a direct download link at the bottom of the post as usual.

5th anniversary podcasts – Turntable Radio live from Shibuya

Records

As announced earlier, we continue our 5th anniversary celebrations with another very special podcast, our second Japan live session.

This time we headed out to Shibuya, for the POPGROUP offices where DJ Baku, Exsample (Ken-One, Naoki and Shige) and Miyajima came together for the occasion. As with the first session, back in September, the idea was simple – ask the guys to come together, put them in a room with lots of gear and just record the outcome. With less space this time round, but still bags of enthusiasm, we took over one of the rooms in the POPGROUP offices and got down to business.

Unfortunately, Miyajima had to leave early as we had some delays in setting up (as always) and so he only appears on one of the tracks. For the rest, what basically happened was that Baku and Exsample jammed together for the best part of 3/4 hours and what you’ll hear on this podcast are edited takes from the jam session. Pretty much everything you’ll hear was done unrehearsed and off the cuff, with the guys chatting in between takes, bouncing ideas and just discussing a rough direction for what they would do.

The session also coincided with the release of Baku’s second album, Dharma Dance (check the recent news item below for more on that), and so Baku, who was using Serato and a Pioneer 909 mixer, primarily used sounds he had made and produced for his album, including drums, guitar melodies and synth lines. For the majority of the tracks you’ll hear in the podcast, Baku provided the backbone for the track with the Exsample guys adding on top, with melodies and vocal cuts. On a couple of tracks the roles were reserved with Naoki and Ken-One taking the lead on drums, and everyone else filling in. So for those who haven’t yet heard the album, this session should give you a pretty good idea of some of the tracks’ moods and influences.

In addition to all this, Ken-One also premiered a new loop routine for us and there is, as I said, a 3 way session between Baku, Ken One and Miyajima, as well as an Exsample freestyle.

Turntable Radio – December 07 podcast

December 22, 2007 by Laurent
Filed under Audio Podcasts, Podcasts (all)

With a bit of delay (well ok maybe more than a bit) the final podcast of 2007 is available. Just in time for xmas and new year too, so hopefully most of you will have plenty of time to enjoy it over the holidays. This one is a bit of a special too, with a whole bag of exclusives so I can only recommend you bump it loud, sit back and enjoy. And maybe also annoy some family members in the process.

In this month we have brand new tracks, exclusives and never heard before remixes from 2tall, Ken One, Baku, Blood One, Delusions of Grandeur, edIT ft D-Styles, Yppah, Tayone, Bungalow Zen and Domeldogg. The artists getting remixed include The Bug, Baku, Kentaro and 2nd Class Citizen, and we’ve also got a few old favourites from Taim, Happee and Shone thrown in for good measure. Some of the exclusive remixes and tracks are among some of my favourite this year, and the show serves as a kind of roundup for 07 too, as it features a majority of the artists who’ve been doing a lot of interesting work across the board, and the world.

As usual there’s a full tracklist with links and info below so if you like what you hear please show your support by hitting up the artists and label and purchasing the music. The podcast is available on iTunes, Odeo, via our RSS feed on feedburner and all other podcatching services (which are linked on the top right corner of the site) and for those who still haven’t figured out how to subscribe to podcasts, there is a direct link at the end of this post as well as a flash streamer for those at work. Subscribers will receive the podcast very shortly.

Turntable Radio will return in 2008, with a bit of a special occasion. As of September 07, Turntable Radio is five years old. That’s right five years of broadcasting (on FM, online stream and then podcasts) tablist music from around the world, and across the years. To celebrate the occasion we’ll be running a series of podcasts until September 08. The podcasts will include both audio and video, continuing from the successful video casts we did this summer with the Cuts of Culture 2 special. I won’t divulge too much yet as we’re still finalising various things, but you can be sure it’ll be a series of podcasts to remember. For a start it’ll mark the return to TTR of Mr Trick for a special one-off versus show between Trick and myself, and the series will also feature a video interview with D-Styles and Shortkut, who were the first two people interviewed by Trick five years ago on the first ever TTR show. Other guests on the series will include Mr Henshaw, Ken One, Baku, 2tall and more both in audio and video. I’ll be posting more details as we have them but you can expect the 5 year anniversary special to start sometime in Jan/Feb 08.

Until then we wish everyone of our listeners, all the artists and labels, and all our supporters a very happy and joyful holiday season and we’ll catch you all in 2008.

Peace

Laurent

‘Cuts of Culture 2 – The Podcasts’: Week 8

September 9, 2007 by Laurent
Filed under Cuts of Culture 2 series, Podcasts (all)

CoC week 8

We finally reach the penultimate session in our 2 month long special podcast series. After 7 weeks of videos and audio we’re now very proud to present to you the Cuts of Culture 2 compilation mix by 2tall. Which I’m going to guess is probably what most of you have been waiting for. Well you have to wait no longer, it’s here in its full glory for you to enjoy. And be sure to stay tuned for week 9, as we see off the Cuts of Culture 2 Podcasts with some very tasty secret downloads, which you’ll have to wait another week to find out all about.

Various Artists mixed by 2tall – Cuts of Culture 2
This mix follows from the first Cuts of Culture compilation which was released in 2005. Once more the idea was simple – to put together and showcase a selection of who we rate as the best and most interesting artists today working with turntables. As is always the case we weren’t able to get everyone we wished, but after 6 months of hard work in early 2006 2tall was able to put together this mix showcasing some of our favourite established and upcoming artists.
Building on the first release, this time we also wanted to showcase more worldwide talent and so we have not only established names from the US and European countries, but also upcoming talents from Poland, Japan, South Africa, Hungary and Germany. In addition we also wanted to put more focus on the production work which these artists do, after all the turntable is only a means to an end, another production tool. Something we’ve done by featuring collaborative tracks between tablists and producers including the likes of Bayaka (Japan), Exile (US), Thrash (UK), Evil Ed (UK) and Bichi (Denmark).
Exclusive tracks come from the likes of D-Styles, Excess, Tayone and Bungalow Zen, ie.merg_, Netik and Dq alongside tracks which are available in all good shops, and which we urge you to check out if you like what you hear.
Rounding off this showcase of musical talent is another posse cut masterminded by 2tall – following from his first posse cut on the previous volume, this time his ‘Sharpshooters Convention’ features renowned and not so known cutters including Enfoe, Taim, Unkut, Square One, Rafik, Captain Cavern and Netik.
As we’ve said before the aim with Cuts of Culture has always been simple and we hope that once more we’ve managed to achieve it. Show that there is so much more to this scratching thing than what people might first think and provide a platform for people to showcase their work to the public at large. The mix, and compilation, is now just one year old, having been originally planned for a late 06 release and while it’s taken some time to get it out we reckon it’s still sounding fresh.
To accompany this download we’ve made available the original liner notes and tracklist in pdf format as well as a hi res version of the cover, which you can download and print should you want to (see links below).
For more on 2tall and all the artists and releases check the liner notes which include links and all release info (links are clickable directly from the pdf file).
