We start our very long overdue series of podcasts on the excellent Community Skratch collective with a video from their Community Skratch BBQ event, which was held in the summer of 2008 in Brighton.

I was first made aware of the Community Skratch collective by Jim Manipulate from Brighton, one third of Grandeurs of Delusion and a long time TTR favourite and friend.

The short history behind the collective goes like this:

The Community Skratch Games High Rollers Bonanza came into being Easter weekend 2007 in the Bierhaus,Galway. It’s purpose is to further the art of turntable manipulation and raise awareness of HipHop DJ culture,a riposte to the increasing commercialisation and creative cul-de-sac of modern DJ battles. The centrepiece of the weekend is the Games themselves, taking place amid a backdrop of workshops/seminars, skratch music showcases and a barrage of funk, hiphop, electro and sweaty dancing folk….

And this in so many words is exactly why the Community Skratch Games and collective is a great idea and one that has our full support here at TTR.

Due to my own move back from Japan to Europe, a hard drive failure and various other fun things we haven’t really had the time to sit down and arrange something properly with these guys, even though we’ve been trying to get some podcasts hooked up for about a year now. But I’m very happy to say we’re about to remedy this.

First up is this video from last year’s event, which has been available on the NozL site for a while. It’s a 30 minute run down of the BBQ with some of the best bits from the day’s showcases including G.O.D, Vince Mack Mahon, Blam & Plato, Blood One and more.

Up next we’ll have some videos from this year’s Community Skratch Games, held over the bank holiday weekend in April. And following this we’ll also be airing some exclusive audio podcasts with various members of the Community Skratch collective including G.O.D, Blam & Plato and more. This all leading nicely up to the release of the new G.O.D and Vince Mack Mahon EPs on NozL recordings in the summer. And by the way we’ll be airing tracks from these releases and other bits in an upcoming TTR podcast.

For more on the collective check their myspace. You can also visit the NozL website and shop to purchase music from many of the artists featured in the video.

Many thanks to Rich Maroon for his help in sorting this out as well as Lewis and Jim for alerting us to this in the first place and trying to arrange for various podcasts over the last year. We will get there somehow. If all goes to plan we’ll be attending the next event and bring some additional footage and audio too.

For now though, just sit back and relax.

As always with our video podcasts the file is optimised for iPod and iTunes, but will work fine on all standard players. If you have any issues check your codecs.

File type is .mp4, 197mb, 30 mins.

Turntable Radio – The Mr Trick Years: Show #18

france-sm“This week Turntable Radio turns its attention to the French turntablist scene, airing tracks from the likes of DJ Pone, Netik, Troubl, SamSaScratch, Crazy B, DJ Mouss, Turntabl Spirits, Audiomicid (feat. DJ Kodh) and more. Most importantly though, we are proud to air another WORLD EXCLUSIVE – this time courtesy of reigning DMC Team champions Birdy Nam Nam. The track, “From Here To There”, has to be heard to be believed: think dub style beats and crafty turntable melodies and you’re only halfway there. This one has been on permanent rotation since we got it – superb! Also on air this week are: Astro, Revolution, DJ Idea, Q-Bert, Craze, Scarfade, Mista Ed, Stylewarz, Short-e, Phaderheadz, Mixmaster Mike and more… As ever, this shit ain’t to be missed people!” (Originally aired 2nd Feb 2003)

cocob

Long time listeners of the show will no doubt remember the name CocoB, the Dutch tablist and producer who was a firm favourite of Trick’s back in the days. After a fairly extended period of silence, he hit us up recently to let us know his new website was now live.

Head over to cocob-productions.com for the full low down and to find out about the man’s latest projects. You can also check his myspace for more music. It’s good to see CocoB around again, and hopefully we’ll be hearing more from him in the near future.

Turntable Radio – The Mr Trick Years: Show #17

timemachine-sm“This week we sit down with the Truesicians, one of the UK’s finest tablist crews, to chat about their history, their views, their music and much more. Alongside this we have freestyles, a skit they laid down, an exclusive airing of 2Tall’s brand new track “Growth 2″ and a track made especially for Turntable Radio – “Superdoodle”. Also on the show tonight we have music from SamSaScratch, Stylewarz, DJ Craze and the 2002 World Series-winning set from DJ Vajra of the Platter Pirates. Definitely one not to miss!” (Originally aired 26th Jan 2003)

Mr Trick writes:This show is now noteworthy for one particular reason, namely that we aired a bunch of 2tall stuff that never saw the light of day. Thinking about it, that applies to a fair portion of Turntable Radio shows (that’s what happens when the man happens to be a close friend!), but I still think these tracks are dope and worth looking out for. Will 2tall ever release them? No… more’s the pity!

Community Skratch Music

Rich Nozl dropped us a line recently to alert us and everyone else of a free compilation, 23 tracks deep, put together by the collective behind the Community Skratch Games, which includes Nozl, Jimmy Manipulate, Vince Mack Mahon and the G.O.D crew.

The compilation is available for free download from Nozl’s online shop (link below) featuring music from scratch related artists worldwide. A few of the tracks we’ve aired over the last year on TTR, so this is the perfect chance to grab them and more and have them in high quality goodness for your ears.

While you’re there you might want to put in some pre orders for the forthcoming Vince Mack Mahon and G.O.D releases which will be dropping in coming months and which are most definitely worth your time and money. Check recent Rhythm Incursions podcasts for a couple of exclusives and stay tuned for a new Turntable Radio podcast soon featuring all this and more.

Also look out for some Turntable Radio specials with the Community Skratch Games collective and G.O.D. More on that soon.

For now though get downloading!

Apologies all for the lack of shows…

sorryAs many have noticed, we’ve been a little quiet with the podcasts of late. Our apologies for this, but as Turntable Radio remains a strictly non-commercial site run by myself and Laurent, it can sadly fall foul of the rest of our lives getting in the way. With the Mr Trick & Wrongtom show taking off, Rhythm Incursions more busy than ever and Laurent’s forthcoming Original Cultures project readying for launch, its taken all our time just to juggle everything and sadly, now and again something falls by the wayside. Rest assured though that we are back on track now, and have three “The Mr Trick Years” podcasts in the bag – one of which is live now, the others following at 7 day intervals. Enjoy!

Turntable Radio – The Mr Trick Years: Show #16

flashback-sm“This week we step back with more never-before-aired tracks and sessions than ever, from various tablists across the world including Scarfade, Timestretch and Marvel in the UK, Manic Store in Japan, DJ Joolz in Germany and much, much more. To celebrate the release of the awesome “History of the Hip Hop DJ vol. 1″ CD we are also doing a “super old skool” triple threat of cuts, harking back to 1982, 83 and 84 respectively with tracks from World Famous Supreme Team, Uncle Jamms Army and Knights of the Turntables. Nostalgic stuff – make no mistake! We are also proud to air in full the mighty battle between DJs M-Tech and Netik at last years ITFs. The pedigree of both these guys is ridiculously high, thus guaranteeing this to be some stunning audio. A head to head battle, it demonstrates all the things we love about these contests. So, sit back get comfortable and crank the stereo up LOUD, cuz this is one show you do not want to miss…” (Original show aired 19th Jan. 2003)
