Turntable Radio – The Mr Trick Years: Show #11

For show 11, we (and I quote) “decided to take a break from our regular format to take a look at the mix output of the mighty 1200 Hobos crew”. Now, in the course of doing these shows one question I always got asked was “how the hell do you find 90 minutes of tablist music to play each and every week?”. Well, looking back my response now is “I really have no idea”, but one prime indicator of things drying up on the music front was the “mix specials”, in which I created a get-out clause, namely focussing on 2 or 3 mixes rather than scrape together 20+ tracks to air. This show was the first of those, and while they do scream “I ran out of tracks!” to me, the fact remains that with hindsight I’m glad I put some time to covering mixtapes I thought were essential. These days mixes are ten-a-penny; anyone can whack one online and get some downloads. Back then though, whilst we had the internet and all that, mixtapes and mix CDs were still the underpinning of the scene, with most of the main figures having made their names on them (and/or battles).
To me, the 1200 Hobos were an almost mythical crew. With Dibbs at the centre, they seemed almost limitless in number and yet – with rare exception – their output was never less than brilliant. Naturally Dibbs himself was one of the finest, but digging down there were slept-on legends like Marcus B, a man whose mixtapes were, quite simply, works of genius.
So, grab this show for a taster of just how great the Hobos were as a crew, with excerpts from 3 mixes for your ears: DJ Signify’s “Mixed Messages”, Mr Dibbs’ “Abduction of the Times 6.66″ and finally, my favourite, Marcus B’s “Sunshine Ambassador”.

p.s. listening back I’ve just remembered the other reason for this mix special. I’d gone out the night before for the Snatchcon Xmas Scratch party and gotten hammered. I think that was the mythical night when DJ Clockwork was so drunk he passed out in Trafalgar Square and was pronounced dead by the police, before waking up and lurching off home. Sterling work that man!
