That’s right people – xmas is a month away and we’ve got an impressive selection of giveaways to share in the spirit. We’ve got 6 competitions for you – all open at once. Think of it as the Turntable Radio and Spin Science xmas giveaway extravaganza.

Prizes come from Eclectic Breaks, Stanton, The Inside & Norm Rex, NozL, Needlework Records and the Turntable Radio & Spin Science goodies box. As some of you may already know I will be relocating to Japan in the new year, and so the goodies box needs to be emptied before I move (space is somewhat limited in my suitcase) and I’ve found quite a few things that should make some listeners happy. More on the move later (don’t worry the show and sites aren’t going anywhere) and in the meantime read on for full detail of all the competitions.

Deadline for all competitions: 08/12/2006, midnight GMT

Email all answers for all/any competition to: laurent AT turntableradio.com

Please include your actual postal address with your emails – I will do my best to get all the packages out the monday following the end of the competitions so you get them by xmas.

NB: you can enter all the competitions once – and only once. So that’s one entry per person, for every competition we’re running. One competition is UK only, all others are open to worldwide entries – non UK entries can therefore enter up to 5 competitions.

Muzzell puts in some donkey work

EJSR006_front_350.jpg

Muzzell, one of our favourite DJs from the UK, has been putting in some serious work. And the result is Donkey Work, his latest break record, produced and released with UK based producer Awekid.

Fresh off the Cruel Transitions record he co-released with Silk Kuts from UkTurntablist, Donkey Work sees Muzzell team up with Awekid for an interestsing slice of wax – that is one that doesn’t sound like the thousands of break records that have come before it but still contains all the essential elements to make it a very worthy purchase.

On offer are:
- A remix of ‘Requiem’ by The Thunderclaps
- Beats from Muzzell and Awekid
- Skip proof, timed drums and vocal sentences
- A section full of instrument sounds designed to be used with loopers and pedals
- A wide range of classic scratch sounds and fresher bits too

So as you can see there’s plenty on there to get stuck in and to make Donkey Work a worthy addition to your crates or shelves. Be it for battles, productions or live shows, there’s something on there for everyone.

The record is being put out on the Ejectorseat label and should be in shops by the end of November. For more info on where to cop it and to see an online flash trailer hit up the Ejectorseat site. For more info on Muzzel, hit up his site.

And while you’re at it be sure to also check the aforementioned Cruel Transitions record by Muzzell and Silk Cuts, out now on the UKturntablist label – and if you’re quick enough you can also cop all the label’s past releases (such as Kutter’s Choice, Phonorchestra and Vinystyle) for silly prices in packs of 2, 3 or 4. Can’t say fairer than that really – hit up the ukt shop now.

Hell xmas ain’t far off, so treat yourselves.

Entries accepted for Coupe Ca Frais 3 – scratch freestyle competition

The French freestyle battle, Coupe Ca Frais (or Cut It Up Fresh for those lacking in linguistic skills), is returning once more to the French capital (which is Paris for the geographically challenged amongst us).

This time the man to beat is Red Jacket (member of Scratch Science, current French DMC team champions). The battle format hasn’t changed though – one beat, one minute, one on one. Can’t get simpler than that and more to the point. No pissing about with 6 minutes of yawntastic noisyness – just good old cutting.

The battle has in the past seen showcases from some of the world’s finest including BNN, 2tall, Netik, Excess and Toadstyle so expect one or more showcases along the same lines. Details of the showcases and other entertainment on the day are still unconfirmed so check back for more.

In the meantime though if you fancy a piece of the action (along with past entrants and favourites such Cavern and Enfoe), then get your 2 minutes (or more) freestyle audio or video to the following email adress before the 10th of December: coupecafrais@gmail.com. More up to date info can be found on the following pages too:
Hand Control myspace
CCF myspace

Previous sponsors have included Ortofon and Vestax, so chances are the same will be on board this year.

Oh and the date, time and location is:
The afternoon of the 21/12/06, at ‘Le Tryptique’ night club, Paris, France.

Ahhh… DJ Nike

Step back in time with me, if you will, to remember (and laugh uncontrollably) at the 2nd worst entry ever to grace a DMC stage (the first being, of course, Hey B Chullee and his legendary “you have AIDS?” routine)… I refer of course to the one, the only, DJ Nike. His curious likeness to Borat only adds to the brilliance of this clip in 2006…

Now: first person to get Hey B Chullee’s routine loaded onto YouTube gets a Cuts of Culture CD from yours truly!

Gravis unveil new A-Trak-designed DJ bag

November 15, 2006 by Mr Trick

Now, I’ve seen more than your fair share of DJ bags. You had your Wax Sack style, which was nice. Then you had the Noisy Stylus Battle Bag, which was even nicer, being purpose-designed for battle DJs. However, nothing can surely come close to the large-and-fully-in-charge new DJ bag from Gravis of all people – a company usually better known for their footwear, as I recall. Designed with A-Trak, this is basically your last word in DJ luggage. Check it:

Bag3

As you can see, at first glance the bag looks like one mighty suitcase kind of thing – on wheels at least, thank god. Flip open the lid though and as well as storage for 45s, a mixer, or whatever you choose, you also have a solid surface on which to rest an MPC, a phrase sampler or whatever gear you want. Handy, no?

Bag1

On top of that, you then have a bag inside the bag, which you can detach if you so desire…

Bag4

As if all that ain’t enough though, you can even flip the whole thing onto its back and unzip the entire front, giving you an instant crate for your vinyl:

Baq2

HELL YES – this is some serious luggage for your pro DJ. RRP in the UK is £160 – a lot of money to spend, but then once you own this you’ll prolly not be needing any more DJ-related baggage. Oh, and did the Serato users amongst you spot that the pocket on the front of the bag is exactly the right size for your Serato boxes? Niiiice touch from A-Trak there – himself a Serato user.

TGOS – Truth About Pan’s Sons album available for download

The Groove of Satyre collective have just released their free compilation, ‘Truth About Pan’s Sons’, which is available for download from their site as of last night.

You will remember the project as we mentioned it when the crew released their recent Dialogue And Random 2 record – the project is essentially a collective effort to showcase music from artists worldwide made only using the DAR series of records. But that’s not all, in addition to fourteen exclusive tracks, you also get a video from the V-Scratch guys in Switzerland showcasing both the TGOS records and the V-Scratch visual software they’ve been developping (which as you’ll see is pretty impressive all by itself) and a looper from the legendary Mr Henshaw (First Power Crew, Dirtstyle, Funkshitup) and Cavern from the TGOS collective.

So that’s an hour of music as well as hours of fun with the looper. And when you know beats come from one of the most legendary beat makers on the scratch scene this isn’t going to be one of those throw away loopers you’ll play with once and won’t touch again.

The whole package is available for download from this page right here. It’s a zip of around 200mb containing the tracks, video and looper as well as artwork and online liner notes about each artist.

That’s right you might be asking – who the hell is on this compilation? Well the full tracklisting is below and as you can see includes some of the nicest tablist and production talent from Europe, the US and Japan.

01/ Panic ! Preface by KOMATAS (FRANCE)
02/ DJ RUTHLESS (USA) – Uproar
03/ COMME CI COMME ÇA COMME KYPSKI & LAH (HOLLAND) – A fuck on the first date
04/ MORSE (FRANCE) – Contre-Pouvoir
05/ LAMONT (BELGIUM) – Amnesia Walls
06/ MR HENSHAW (USA) – Go Satyre
07/ 2TALL (UK) – River Styx
08/ CAVERN (FRANCE) – Glimmer
09/ iNSiDEaMiND (CANADA) – From April To August
10/ B-JU (GERMANY) – The Groove Of Halen On Rollerskates
11/ PHONOMORPHA (FRANCE) – Planète Cerveau 44.3
12/ KEN ONE (JAPAN) – Sora
13/ PEDESTRIAN (UK) – Lands
14/ FRANK VIGROUX (FRANCE) – Boxing Club 1
15/ VALERIO & CLAUDIO SPOLETINI (SWISS) – Hypo // VIDEO CLIP //
16/ LOOPER by MR HENSHAW & CAVERN

So if you haven’t already gone to grab it what exactly are you waiting for? We can’t recommend this enough – not just because we’re fans of these guys but because this is a really well put together project and a first of its kind. Released under the Creative Commons Licence it regroups a different and varied selection of artists and showcases a side of tablism and production that needs to be pushed forward.

We really can’t wait for more projects like this. For more info on the TGOS collective and where to get their records, head over to thegrooveofsatyre.com

NozL EP dropping soon

NozL’s first EP is finally ready to drop. Regular listeners to the show will remember the British duo, whose music we’ve been showcasing for a while. Well after a lot of headache and work the guys have finally managed to put together their first EP, which will be released on their own NozL Recordings label with distribution in the UK via Cargo.

Entitled “The Man Who Brought Us Here Has Vanished”, the EP regroups some older tracks alongside new offerings such as the 2tall collabo ‘Akabizzl’. Here’s an extract from the press release:

“NozL’s inventive music will appeal to fans of many different tastes – hand picking their ingredients from various genres including jazz, ambience, pop, dubstep and folk.
Tracks such as “Expanding Rebecca” will demand the attention of electronic and ambient aficionados; Hip Hop fans will relish in the head nodding beats and luscious guitar of “Sharp Star Mumbles” and “Softly Falls The Night”; and the hypnotic melodies of “IDK” will entrance the chill-out heads.
NozL have pieced together this ambitious project almost entirely from scratching together small parts from many different vinyl records, side stepping the pit falls and creative dead ends of traditional computer programmed electronica. This future vision of electronic production gives NozL a unique and cutting edge sound of their own.”

Indeed the EP is an interesting bag of tricks, managing to broach a range of styles without falling into the pitfalls of either traditional electronic music or scratch music. Regular listeners of the show will remember ‘Sharp Star Mumbles’ as one of our favourite tracks of last year. Those of you who missed out should check the archives. The full tracklist is as follows:

One Part Short
Sharp Star Mumbles feat Mala
Interlude
Akabizzl feat 2tall
Sticks and Stones
Softly Falls The Night
Expanding Rebecca
IDK feat Mala
The Wash

The EP will be available on vinyl from NozL’s newly set up online shop in the coming weeks. In the meantime you can head over there and place your pre-order.
As well as the new EP, NozL are offering up a free download every monday until the release of the EP – the downloads are recent, exclusive dubstep tracks from one half of the duo, Lone Wolf. These are available in high quality mp3 format – just hit up the shop to get yours.

The EP should hit shops shortly after the official release – if you’re not in the UK then we recommend you place a pre-order on the site to ensure you get your copy as soon as they’re ready.

Look out for some more previews from the EP on the next podcast and in the meantime be sure to check www.nozl.co.uk to get your pre-order on and some of those free downloads.

Nick Nack – Beat Drop EP out now

BeatDrop-front.jpg

Texas man Nick Nack is back with a new release on Super Bro Records, entitled ‘Beat Drop’ EP.

This is a small vinyl pressing featuring 3 new tracks and some turntable bits for you all to get on with. The EP should be hitting shops worldwide right now, and if you can’t find it then hit up www.superbro.com or get your usual vinyl dealer to do so and get it in stock.
You can check samples from the EP over on Nick’s site, right here. And we’ll have a track from the EP on the next podcast, so stay tuned for that. The EP is some straight dancefloor friendly tracks, with a sprinkling of scratching – if you’re a fan of Nick’s production like we are here at Turntable Radio than we don’t need to say that this comes highly recommended.

Those of you who’ve been following Nick for a while might remember that he’s been working on film scoring for a while, including some live scoring of silent movies. Well all this has led him to scoring his first movie – a poetry documentary entitled Slam Planet. The score for the movie will be out shortly, in the meantime you can peep the title track on the ‘Beat Drop’ EP. Those of you in the Austin, Texas area can check the movie at the Alamo Drafthouse.

For more Nick Nack goodness be sure to check Crowd Control Records and his myspace page.
